Description

The studies of nuclear reactions at low energies, constructing effective field theories (EFTs), are discussed. EFTs are a new theoretical method for the studies of nuclear astrophysics, which provide us with a perturbative expansion scheme in the reaction amplitudes to be calculated in theory. While those also require us to have a clear separation momentum scale between relevant degrees of freedom in low energy and irrelevant degrees of freedom in high energy for the reaction to study. We review the construction of a cluster EFT for the study of elastic $\alpha$-$^{12}$C scattering at low energies and the estimate of astronomical $S$ factor of radiative $\alpha$ capture on $^{12}$C in the helium burning process, and discuss the merits and demerits of the theoretical approach.
